"Injuries to Suryakumar and Ishan Raise Questions About India's World Cup XI"
It was an unusual training session for Team India on the eve of their crucial World Cup match against New Zealand. Rahul Dravid had initially hinted that Suryakumar Yadav would be in the middle-order batting role in the absence of Hardik Pandya. However, Suryakumar Yadav suffered a painful blow to his right forearm during practice. He was set to make his World Cup debut and bat at No. 6 against New Zealand but was struck by a throwdown during practice, causing concern.
In addition to Suryakumar's injury, Ishan Kishan, the only other batter in the 15-member squad, had to cut his net session short after being stung by a honey bee. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya was still recovering from a left ankle injury sustained during the previous match against Bangladesh.
During a press conference, Dravid hinted at a choice between Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for Hardik's role but seemed to favor Suryakumar as a finisher. However, with Suryakumar's forearm injury and uncertainty about his fitness, India might be forced to play Ishan if he is fit after the bee sting.
There's also a possibility of Mohammed Shami entering the XI, as Dravid mentioned that Shardul Thakur was considered the fourth seamer in the squad. Dravid suggested that Shami, as well as Ravichandran Ashwin, could be viable options, but he didn't provide many details about the final playing XI.
If Suryakumar Yadav doesn't recover in time, it could lead to Ishan Kishan taking the No. 6 position in the batting order. In this scenario, Mohammad Shami might have a better chance of playing than Shardul Thakur. However, if Ishan Kishan is also unavailable, India may have no choice but to include Shardul Thakur at number 7 and promote Ravindra Jadeja to the sixth spot, strengthening the bowling options but potentially weakening the batting lineup.
This situation may lead to last-minute changes in the India XI for the match against New Zealand.
