"Nuclear Researchers Awarded for Exposing Fake Honey Brands"
A dedicated team of nuclear researchers, led by Dr. Angel T. Bautista VII and Norman DS. Mendoza, has been honored for their outstanding work in unveiling the alarming prevalence of counterfeit honey in the Philippines. These findings hold significant implications for both the environment and local beekeepers, affecting a broad audience ranging from eco-conscious citizens to industry experts.
The dedicated "Honey Team" from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) employed cutting-edge stable isotope techniques to scrutinize the authenticity of honey brands available in the Philippine market. Their research revealed that four out of five local honey brands were adulterated with cheap sugar syrup, posing a substantial threat to the local beekeeping industry by severely reducing its revenue.
Dr. Bautista, the team leader, stated that what began as a research project has evolved into a vital advocacy. "Our primary focus throughout this project has always been the people - those who produce and consume honey," he emphasized.
Furthermore, the DOST-PNRI Honey Team played an instrumental role in revising the Philippine National Standards (PNS) Honey Product Standard Specifications. These standards now incorporate stable isotope-based methods, ensuring the authenticity of honey products, as outlined in the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards 185:2022.
The collaboration of the DOST-PNRI Honey Team with regulatory bodies and beekeeping organizations ensures continuous monitoring to guarantee that only genuine honey reaches the local market. This initiative instills confidence in consumers, reassuring them that they are purchasing authentic honey from local beekeepers and sellers.
Dr. Carlo A. Arcilla, Director of DOST-PNRI, commended the team's dedication, emphasizing the importance of their work in nuclear research and development. The hope is that this regional recognition will be a stepping stone towards receiving a national award, further underscoring the relevance of nuclear R&D in everyday life.
