Buzzing Summer Community Garden Hosts 'How To Bee' Workshops and Celebratory Evening

In a harmonious blend of nature and education, the Combine Street Community Garden Association (CRCGA) is gearing up for a vibrant summer celebration. Peter 'Lewie' Lewis, CRCGA's president, shared details of the upcoming festivities with News Of The Area, promising an enriching experience for gardening enthusiasts and families alike.

"Our pizza and music evening marks the commencement of summer gardening and the launch of the Christmas garden diary," Lewis expressed. The event, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Combine Street Community Garden reserve, will feature a wood-fired pizza oven, musical performances, and a welcoming space for conversation and connection.

Lewis emphasized the family-friendly atmosphere, with ample room for children to play and covered spaces for shelter in case of rain, ensuring an inclusive celebration for all.

A Day Dedicated to Bees: Learning and Appreciating Nature's Pollinators

Continuing the celebration on Sunday, December 3, CRCGA shifts the focus to the fascinating world of bees. Two insightful talks are scheduled to provide attendees with valuable knowledge about these essential pollinators.

Starting at 10 am, the first talk, led by bee experts from Coffs Beekeeping Supplies in Woolgoolga, will delve into the realm of honeybees. Lewis highlighted the educational nature of the workshop, designed for individuals interested in keeping European bees—a species known for both stinging and honey production.

"This introductory workshop covers the physical and legal aspects of keeping bees, offering insights into managing Varroa mites and other common hive pests and diseases," Lewis explained. Attendees will gain knowledge on starting their beekeeping journey while ensuring the health and productivity of their hives.

The second talk, commencing at 1:30 pm, will feature Lewis discussing pollination and the intricacies of keeping native stingless bees. Covering topics such as hive splitting and obtaining sugar-bag honey in small amounts, Lewis aims to showcase the unique differences between native stingless bees and European honeybees.

Educational Enjoyment: Entry by Donation

Entry to both bee-focused workshops is by donation, with attendees encouraged to contribute and bring a snack to share. CRCGA aims to create a welcoming space where individuals of all ages can learn, connect, and appreciate the beauty of community gardening and the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.
