Farewell to the Bada Train A Coastal Journey's Final Chapter

Imagine a train journey along the beach, with the sun casting its warm glow, the sea mist kissing the air, and the rhythmic sound of the train echoing against the coastline. In Korea, this picturesque experience is embodied by the Sea Train, a marvel that graced the east coast. However, on December 26, the Bada Train, a cherished part of this coastal spectacle, will bid its final adieu.

A Coastal Charmer: The Legacy of Bada Train

Since its inaugural run in 2007, the Bada Train has been a symbol of coastal charm, breathing life into an old train by transforming it into a vessel of scenic wonders. Spanning 53 kilometers from Gangneung to Samcheok via the East Sea, the train offers a unique feature—all seats face the sea, providing passengers with an uninterrupted view of the breathtaking east coast. Over its operational years, the Bada Train has enchanted approximately 1.95 million passengers.

Fading Tracks: Budgetary Struggles Lead to Closure

The demise of this special train is, unfortunately, a consequence of budgetary constraints. The cost of replacing the aging train has proven prohibitive, prompting the decision to halt operations. Citizens, already nostalgic about the train's impending farewell, are flocking to book their last rides, cherishing the memories created along the coast.

Although the Bada Train may fade from physical existence, its essence will endure in the hearts of those fortunate enough to share a journey with it.

Budget Woes: The Economic Realities of Sea Trains

Examining the broader landscape, the financial challenges faced by sea trains become evident. The Wolmido Sea Train, for instance, incurred an average annual deficit of 6 billion won. The decision to cancel the project resulted in a sunk cost of 85.3 billion won, with an additional 30 billion won allocated for demolition. The total loss amounted to at least 100 billion won, with an extra 18.3 billion won invested. The project faced further hurdles, including a contested name change from 'Galactic Rail' to 'Ocean Train' just before its anticipated opening.

As we bid farewell to the Bada Train, we recognize the unique challenges faced by these coastal wonders, intricately tied to the ever-changing maritime climate.
