Great Lakes Fish Adapt to Climate Change, but Challenges Remain


It's imperative to recognize that fish, much like numerous other species, are undergoing adaptations in response to climate change. Nevertheless, the full consequences of these changes are not yet fully understood.

As an ecologist, my passion for studying the tangible elements of our environment led me to a deeper awareness of the threats to biodiversity. My research journey has taken me through the realms of species invasions, climate change, and habitat degradation.

The Great Lakes region boasts a rich diversity of fish, with over 150 native species. These fish originally evolved elsewhere but colonized the Great Lakes when retreating glaciers created favorable conditions.

Unfortunately, these fish face threats stemming from habitat alterations and invasions by new species. However, human actions can play a significant role in preserving this biodiversity.

Consider the fact that the area now occupied by the Great Lakes was once buried beneath over a mile of ice. As the glaciers receded and melted approximately 14,000 to 9,000 years ago, the Great Lakes emerged, forming vast, ecologically vacant spaces that fish species later inhabited.

These fish embarked on a journey towards the north, east, and west, gradually populating the Great Lakes. They traversed now-vanished rivers and lakes, ultimately settling in newly formed ecologically rich lakes that offered habitat and an abundance of food resources.

During my postdoctoral research in Ontario, my focus centered on monitoring shifts in the distribution of freshwater fish. I aimed to determine whether these fish were migrating towards polar regions in response to rising temperatures.

To achieve this, I combined data from museum records with information from surveys conducted by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The results demonstrated that warm-water-adapted species like largemouth bass and smallmouth bass were indeed venturing northward. They were even establishing themselves in lakes that were previously considered too cold for their survival but had since warmed.

The process of fish colonization in the Great Lakes region unfolded differently. Over thousands of years, these fish progressively migrated—a pattern that aligns with the gradual climate warming during that era.

However, this migration trajectory differs when it comes to interactions with other species and the concept of ecological opportunity. The Great Lakes presented an open environment with abundant ecological niches, habitat, and prey for these fish to exploit. This is in contrast to species expanding their ranges or moving northward to track contemporary climate changes.

Today, freshwater fish face a multitude of stressors, posing significant risks to their biodiversity. The complex interplay of these stressors necessitates a comprehensive understanding of how they impact fish communities. Such knowledge can contribute to more effective conservation efforts, improved fisheries management, and the sustainable provision of vital resources for human food and recreation.
