Hong Kong Authorities Take Swift Action to Address Bedbug Concerns Amidst Recent Incidents

In response to heightened concerns following the circulation of an online photo purportedly showing a bedbug on an Airport Express train seat, Hong Kong authorities convened with industry representatives on Saturday. The meeting, led by the Environment and Ecology Bureau, brought together key stakeholders, including the Airport Authority, MTR Corporation, Tourism Commission, and various government departments.

The MTR Corporation, a major rail giant, announced an immediate escalation in the cleaning of trains, focusing particularly on non-metallic seats where bedbug infestations are more likely to occur. This move follows recent incidents overseas, prompting proactive measures to safeguard public health.

The Environment and Ecology Bureau, along with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the Centre for Health Protection's port health division, provided technical advice to industry representatives on preventive measures. Concerned lawmakers urged the government to intensify efforts in preventing the spread of bedbugs.

Diane Wong Shuk-han, the acting secretary for environment and ecology, expressed gratitude to the sectors for their prompt response and proactive measures. She emphasized the government's commitment to closely monitoring the situation, strengthening communication with frontline organizations and industries, and providing technical support to prevent the import of bedbugs.

The MTR Corp, responsible for the Airport Express, reported deep cleaning of the train after a passenger's report, though no insects similar to the one in the viral photo were found. The company pledged to enhance inspections and cleaning on select lines, including the Airport Express, high-speed rail, Disneyland Resort line, and East Rail first-class carriages.

As part of ongoing efforts, the Department will intensify educational campaigns at locations like the airport to inform visitors and returnees on preventing the spread of bedbugs. Bedbugs, small oval-shaped parasitic insects, can cause red, swollen, and itchy bites and are typically found in mattresses, bedframes, and upholstery.

This proactive response aims to address public concerns, ensuring a comprehensive approach to prevent the importation and spread of bedbugs in Hong Kong. Continued vigilance and collaboration among all sectors will be crucial in maintaining public health standards.
