Mesmerizing Beekeeping A Passion Turned Profession in Kum County

In the heart of Kum County, a middle-aged man has captivated the community with his remarkable ability to harmoniously coexist with bees. Stanley Gaer, a seasoned beekeeper, has turned his childhood fascination into a sole source of income. His story serves as a testament to the art of beekeeping, or as it's known in the world of AIC culture, an age-old craft that extends far beyond mere livelihood for thousands of small-scale beekeepers.

Stanley's journey into beekeeping commenced at the tender age of nine, and today, he stands as a living testament to the incredible bond between humans and bees. In a landscape where bees often invite themselves into trees and houses, Stanley's relationship with these industrious insects stands out as unique. To Stanley, bees are not just a source of income; they are friends.

At his home, Stanley showcases his harmony with bees through a captivating spectacle. Clad in improvised bee suits crafted from sacks, he gracefully tends to his bee colonies. For Stanley, affording traditional beehives, which typically range between 5,000 to 7,000 Shillings depending on the wood type, remains a challenge. Nonetheless, he has mastered the art of working with what's available.

An extensive market assessment conducted by an international organization between October and November 2021 revealed the challenges that beekeepers in the region face. These include a lack of knowledge about beekeeping processes, insufficient equipment, the migration of bees due to the increased use of pesticides, and the unfortunate issue of theft. These challenges underscore the need for support and guidance within the beekeeping community.

During a visit to Stanley's Farm, Dr. Kirai Kamal, MCA Carolu, and Manga County C all expressed their commitment to helping beekeepers. They pledged to send extension officers to Stanley's farm to assess the viability of bee farming, reinforcing the importance of beekeeping in the region.

Stanley Gaer's remarkable journey is a testament to the power of passion and dedication. His enchanting relationship with bees not only sustains his livelihood but also contributes to the preservation of these vital pollinators. In Kum County, beekeeping transcends economic significance; it embodies a profound connection between humans and nature.
