Safeguarding European Wild Pollinators: A Comprehensive Open-Access Resource

The EU's commitment to understanding and preserving pollinators has culminated in the Safeguard project, actively investing in vital research for over a decade. A recent development is the release of an open-access collection in the 'Research Ideas and Outcomes' (RIO) journal, aimed at enhancing the visibility and impact of pollinator research outcomes.

Safeguarding European Wild Pollinators A Comprehensive Open-Access Resource

In a groundbreaking move towards environmental conservation, the EU's Safeguard project has unleashed a treasure trove of knowledge in the form of an open-access collection. Geared towards safeguarding the invaluable contributions of pollinators to our ecosystem and economy, this collection is not only a boon for researchers but also a gateway for the general public to delve into the world of wild pollinators.

Dive into the 'Research Ideas and Outcomes' (RIO) journal to explore 15 meticulously curated papers covering diverse topics, from the intricate floral resource overlap between honeybees and wild pollinators to the potential environmental benefits of pollinator conservation. The collection doesn't stop there—it's a goldmine for those curious about European bee and hoverfly species, with an updated list featuring around 3,000 species.

But here's the real buzz! The latest addition to this compendium is a riveting study shedding light on Serbia's wild bee fauna. Uncovering new records and filling critical information gaps, the research team monitored 312 bee species across 54 sites in the country. Astonishingly, 25 of these species had never before been recorded in Serbia, and 26 were confirmed without any available records from the 21st century. A significant 67 species, including 10 newly recorded ones, are now flagged as Data Deficient in the European Red List of Bees, underlining the urgency of conservation efforts.

This initiative, culminating in 2025, aims to transform the collection into a "one-stop knowledge hub." Brace yourself for an extensive resource hub that goes beyond research papers, offering reports, protocols, and methodologies—a haven for stakeholders invested in safeguarding our wild pollinators.
