Trash Pickers Triumph UK Claims Gold in Spogomi World Cup 2023

In a groundbreaking event fostering global environmental consciousness, Japan recently hosted the inaugural Spogomi World Cup 2023, a unique competition centered around cleaning up land-based waste. The United Kingdom emerged victorious in this unprecedented "Trash Picking World Cup" held in Tokyo.

In the heart of Tokyo, the Spogomi World Cup 2023 took center stage, signifying a sport where athleticism meets environmental responsibility. The term "SpoGomi" itself is a fusion of "sport" and "gomi," Japanese for garbage, underscoring the event's purpose of tackling ocean pollution caused by improper waste disposal.

Teams, each comprising three members from 21 countries, engaged in a competitive quest to clear the most trash within 90 minutes over two sessions in a designated area. The British team, showcasing prowess and commitment, secured victory by collecting 57.27 kilograms of trash, earning 9,046.1 points. Japan and Italy clinched second and third place, respectively.

"Litter picking is a serious sport," emphasized Sarah Parry, the British team captain, highlighting a shift in perspective from a mere eco-friendly activity to a competitive sporting endeavor aimed at ocean cleanup.

Despite the cleanliness of Japanese streets posing a challenge for participants, the teams navigated their way through, emphasizing the seriousness of their mission. Beatrice Hernandez from Team USA shared insights, stating, "Sometimes it's really hard because there's not a lot of trash, but sometimes I just look a little deeper, like in the bushes, or focus on the cigarette butts on the ground."

Looking ahead, organizers have announced the next Trash Pickup World Cup slated for 2025 in Tokyo. The competition, pioneered by the Social Sports Initiative since 2008, marks a significant global shift, with more than 1400 competitions held worldwide. "It's a cool sport that makes everyone who participates feel good, whether they win or lose," expressed Hiroyuki Iego, a participant representing Japan at the world championships.
