Young South African Beekeeper Wins Top Honors in International Competition
The centenary celebration of a world-famous beekeeping competition featured participants exclusively from South Africa's Western Cape region. While submissions were received from various regions in the British Isles and around the globe, it was Dawid, a young beekeeper from South Africa, who claimed the top spot with his exceptional light and perfumed orange honey, produced by his bees in the Citrusdal area.
Dawid's journey into beekeeping began at a young age when he was mentored by well-known West Coast commercial beekeeper, Pieter Loubser. His talent as a beekeeper was first recognized at the honey exhibition hosted by the Western Cape Beekeeping Industry Association within the NAMPO agricultural expo, where he received the prestigious top development beekeeper award.
Audrey De Jongh of Cape Town secured the third position in the international category of the UK competition with her entry, a complex natural blend of eucalyptus and fynbos honey. Several other beekeepers from Cape Town, such as Roxanne Norris and Achmat Kazie, were also commended for their high-quality honey and beeswax products.
The Western Cape Beekeepers Association (WCBA) actively promotes the exceptional quality of honey produced in the Western Cape. While South African honey export is currently restricted due to regulations, efforts are underway to advocate for a change in this policy, with hopes of sharing their top-tier honey with enthusiasts worldwide.
This article highlights the achievements of South African beekeepers on the international stage and their dedication to producing high-quality honey, which could potentially reach a global audience in the future.
