Action fund launched to help tackle climate change

A council in Surrey is launching an action fund for projects which help tackle the impact of climate change.

Elmbridge Borough Council says the fund is for projects that make a "tangible difference" to education around carbon emissions, biodiversity enhancement, and energy, water, and waste reduction.

Up to £5,000 is available for each group to apply for through the new Elmbridge Community Climate Action Fund.

The council's cabinet member for environmental services Ashley Tilling said: "Projects driven by the community can make a huge difference to reduce the impact of climate change locally."

Applications are being welcomed from non-profit organisations or groups based in the borough that are primarily focused on serving local residents - such as village halls and sports clubs.

The council said: "Since we declared a climate emergency in 2019, climate change and sustainability have been fundamental to our work, and we remain committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030."

The round of funding is open to applications until midnight on 1 September.
