Bee the scientist
The Senior Friendship Center, in partnership with the University of Wyoming, is presenting a Science Roadshow, “Bee the Scientist.” This program is open to all seniors in our county and will be held on Friday, August 9th from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Torrington Senior Friendship Center at 216 East 19th Ave.
Join us as we learn about the importance of pollinators, and the vast diversity of unique bees we have in Wyoming! We will learn about the different ways these bees live through the year (including during our very cold winters) and what plants they need to stay healthy. We will also discuss some of the challenges facing our pollinators and what we can do to help them. The Roadshow team will teach participants to identify some common bee species, build a bee house, and create a “seed bomb” with Wyoming native wildflowers that they can plant in their yard to promote pollinators. Participants will also receive a field guide so they can record what visitors they have to their garden/flowers! Lastly, we will learn a little bit about making electronics and will make a portable weather station that can be put outside your house, so you’ll also know what kind of weather the bees are foraging in. This is important extra information that can help scientists understand how bees cope with changing weather patterns! If able, all the observations can be uploaded onto a nature observation website that collects community science data and helps us see where different animals are found!
