Experts warn beekeepers, horse owners about surge of mosquitoes

Experts are warning beekeepers and horse owners in South Carolina about a surge of mosquitoes breeding after Tropical Storm Debby.

Clemson Cooperative Extension said mosquitoes “are breeding in abundance in floodwaters.” To combat the problem, multiple counties are increasing mosquito abatement using methods including aerial spraying.

Clemson is urging beekeepers to be aware of increased spraying and prepare to cover hives if necessary. State pesticide law requires 24-hour notice prior to spraying.

Beekeepers can report the location of their hives and receive notifications of sprayings by registering with Clemson’s Voluntary Beehive Mapping Program.

The mosquito-borne disease Eastern Equine Encephalitis is also on the rise. The virus causes inflammation in the brain and is often deadly.

Two horses in the Lowcountry had to be euthanized after contracting EEE. A vaccine is available so contact your veterinarian if you own horses.
