Climate change caused by human activity has led to extreme temperatures that threaten life on Earth. Scientists claim, that the heat wave observed in the Mediterranean in July 2024 would have been "virtually impossible" without the influence of global warming.

Research has shown that a new heat wave that has hit southern Europe and northern Africa has brought temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius. Hot periods are becoming more frequent and longer due to climate change caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

Extreme heat killed more than two dozen people in a single day in Morocco, fueled massive forest fires in Greece and the Balkans, and exhausted athletes at the Paris Olympics. Scientists from the World Weather Attribution organization said that the temperature on Earth has reached a threshold that is impossible without human influence.

Friederika Otto, a climatologist at Imperial College London, said such extremely hot Julys had become commonplace and could recur about once every decade. Scientists have already established that climate change is leading to more frequent and longer heat waves, but July 2024 was the hottest on record.
