West Central Beekeeping Association offering classes
The West Central Beekeeping Association meets once a month in two different locations.
In nearby Palestine in Wirt County is one of the locations, alongside Arnoldsburg in Calhoun County
Robert Turner, the president of the beekeeping association, says it’s important for people learn how to do beekeeping with classes so they can understand how they can keep them alive.
“Anybody can put bees in the backyard, and they’ll make it, because bees will do what bees do,” Turner said. “Once you get into winter, if you don’t educate them on how to take care of the pests and stuff like that, they won’t winter out, and you’ll get through the spring, and you’ll end up with boxes of dead bees. You’ve got to educate them on how to take care of the pests.”
Turner added that the classes with the West Central Beekeeping Association hold hands on classes for those who are interested.
‘We’re able to take the students out into the apiary and give them hands-on training with the bees in the hives,” Turner adds. “It’s a lot easier to show them something there than it is on any book or on a PowerPoint slide to put a frame of bees in somebody’s hand like that,”
