Honeybee Discovery Center Opens "Bee-Natomy 101"

Honeybee Discovery Center invites visitors to discover more about honeybees and the incredible insects’ anatomy with the opening of its new exhibit “BEE-NATOMY 101” on Sept. 13 from 3-6 p.m. and Sept. 14th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The new “BEE-NATOMY 101” exhibit is a custom attraction exclusive to Honeybee Discovery Center, developed by its founders, to provide a science-based look into the anatomy of a bee. The exhibit will provide an immersive exploration of the anatomy of a honeybee, one of nature’s most remarkable creatures.

Visitors will discover the intricate beauty and wonder of a honeybee including how they communicate, how they see the world, a close up look at their anatomy and more. Hands-on learning includes displays, models, and interactive lessons that guide attendees through the anatomy of a honeybee and reveal their vital role in the ecosystem, showcasing their complex behaviors and the essential contributions they make to nature.

Special grand opening weekend activities:

  • The gift shop will be open during admission hours, featuring a unique selection of local honey in our honey vault and an array of bee-related items and gifts.
  • Kids (12 and under) get in FREE throughout the opening weekend and a free Honeybee Discovery Center pin to the first 50 visitors, making it the perfect opportunity for a family outing.
  • Tickets are available to purchase at the door, $3 for adults.
  • Enjoy a FREE scoop of Schubert’s honey ice cream on us during opening weekend.

“BEE-NATOMY 101 demonstrates how every part of a bee’s body is designed with precision to perform specific tasks that are crucial for their survival and the survival of their colony,” said Carolina Burreson, CEO and board member of the Honeybee Discovery Center. “This exhibit offers so much learning for all ages; we highly recommend a visit to the Honeybee Discovery Center to check it out.”

Visitors to BEE-NATOMY will have a chance to explore up close how bees possess a range of specialized bodily structures that make their anatomy truly unique, allowing them to excel in their roles as pollinators and hive caretakers. Each part of their anatomy is finely tuned to meet the demands of their environment and their duties within the colony.

The new exhibit also illustrates the complex social behaviors of bees, which are rare in the insect world. The division of labor within a hive—workers, drones, and the queen—relies heavily on the specialized anatomy of each type of bee. This specialization allows the hive to function as a highly efficient and organized unit, capable of producing honey, raising new generations, and surviving in various environmental conditions.

Located in a historic building in downtown Orland, California, Honeybee Discovery Center opened at 501 Walker Street in 2019 to teach the public about honeybees and the rich history of beekeeping in Northern California.

The Center offers a range of private tours, school field trips, school assembly presentations, SERRF and summer school programs. The Honeybee Discovery Center strives to integrate and meet state standards in their curriculum.

Additionally, the Honeybee Discovery Center will host its annual charity casino night fundraiser, “Show Me the Honey,” on Oct. 19 from 5:30-9:00 p.m. at Butte Creek Country Club. Tickets and sponsorship information are available on our website.
