People are only just realising shocking reason bees die when they sting you

Nobody wants to get stung by a bee, and some are more fearful than others.

But many people never realised that once a bee stings you, it actually dies. But why is this? The reality is probably more grim than you could ever have expected.

TikToker @footdocdana captioned her video: "Did you know this?", and while many knew the bee would die after stinging, they didn't realise what actually causes this to happen.

"Did you know that when a honey bee stings a human it actually gets stuck for a while and can't leave?", she asked.

She explained the reason the honey bee cannot detach itself is because "its stinger is barbed".

This means that "when it goes into the skin, it can't easily be pulled back out".

It's bad news for the bee, because once they're finally able to get their stinger out of the person they've stung, "its insides get ripped out because the stinger stays in the skin". Yikes.

"This results in the bee losing its internal organs and it dies", she concluded the video by explaining.

According to Buddha Bee Apiary: "They [bees] usually only sting if they feel threatened. Remember, most honeybees are not aggressive. They are defensive. A honeybee will die when it stings, which means it only stings as a last resort."

Wasp stings, however, do not cause them to die as their stinger is different to a bee's. In the comments of the video, people were left asking "But why?". "Wow", another added.

If you have been stung by a bee, according to the Mayo Clinic, you should: "Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to ease redness, itching or swelling.

"If itching or swelling is bothersome, take an oral antihistamine that contains diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or chlorpheniramine. Avoid scratching the sting area. This will worsen itching and swelling and increase your risk of infection."
