Workshop on scientific beekeeping highlights on sustainable apiculture

 The three-day "Training cum workshop on scientific beekeeping for sustainable honey production & pollination" concluded successfully on August 30 at the School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University. The workshop, held from August 28 to 30, was organized by the All India Coordinated Research Project and the Department of Entomology.

The inaugural session was chaired by Dr Imtinaro L, Professor and Head of the Department of Entomology, and featured special guests Prof Akali Sema, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and Prof L. Daiho, Dean of the School of Agricultural Sciences. Prof Sema highlighted the ecological benefits of beekeeping and its potential to boost income for beekeepers, while Prof Daiho stressed the importance of bee conservation for a sustainable future and encouraged participants to explore various aspects of beekeeping.

Throughout the workshop, attendees participated in 12 technical presentations and practical sessions covering key topics such as Apiculture’s importance, colony organization, bee biology, bee equipment, communication, colony handling, maintenance, bee flora, seasonal management, queen rearing, diseases, pollination, and value-added bee products. The sessions were led by Dr Imtinaro L, Dr Pankaj Neog, Dr Avinash Chauhan, Dr Hijam Shila Devi, Dr Waluniba, Dr Sabbithi S Pawan, Dr Damitri, and Dr Rokozeno.

The training was attended by 10 trainees from various Para Military forces units in Doyang, Kiphire, Kohima, and Medziphema, alongside several students. The valedictory session was addressed by Prof L. Daiho, who emphasized the vital role of bees in ecosystems and public health, and encouraged increased honey consumption.

Dr Avinash Chauhan, Course Coordinator, presented the training report, and certificates of completion were awarded by Prof Daiho. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Waluniba, Assistant Professor of Entomology, followed by a photography session and high tea.
