Deer, honeybees and mushrooms: 3 students decorate newest KRT Artbus
Charleston’s Director of the Office of Public Art Jeff Pierson unveils the Charleston Youth ARTBus on Summers Street at Slack Plaza in Charleston Tuesday Oct. 15, 2024. The bus has art on both sides and on the end of the bus created by three youth artists from three age groups. In the kindergarten through fifth-grade group Hazel Hagler designed the back of the bus, Alicen Jones from the sixth through eighth grades did the art for the driver’s side and Cam Harris from the ninth through the twelfth grades created the art for the passenger entrance side of the bus. KRT Director Sean Hill called it “Three different pieces of art in one.”

The City of Charleston and the Kanawha Regional Transportation unveiled their fifth Artbus Tuesday night as part of FestivFall.This 29-foot-long KRT bus is the first Artbus decorated by local youth artists. The designs were chosen by a committee with input from public votes.
- Hazel Hagler: In the kindergarten through fifth-grade age group, Hazel’s deer drawing was chosen for the back of the bus.
- Alicen Jones: From the sixth- through eighth-grade group, Alicen designed a honeybee on a honeycomb for the driver’s side.
- Cam Harris: At the high school level, Cam created a design of outdoor creatures including a salamander and mushroom.
