Exploring Beekeeping Around the World: A Free Webinar Series by Penn State Extension
Penn State Extension is offering an exciting opportunity for beekeepers, farmers, and enthusiasts of social insects with its upcoming webinar series titled "Beekeeping Around the World." This seven-week series aims to provide insights into beekeeping practices in various parts of the globe, highlighting diverse experiences and techniques.
Here's an overview of the webinar series:
Ukraine (Feb. 15): Explore the prewar and postwar experiences of beekeeping in Ukraine and discover the evolution of beekeeping practices since February 2022.
Thailand (Feb. 22): Delve into Thailand's rich beekeeping heritage, home to half of the world's honey bee species. Learn about native species such as Apis dorsata, A. florea, A. cerana, A. andreniformis, and non-native A. mellifera.
Lesotho (Feb. 29): Discover how beekeeping in Lesotho contributes to sustainability across environmental, social, and economic aspects, aligning with sustainable development goals and promoting tourism.
Mexico (March 7): Gain insights into a small, family-owned beekeeping operation in Chiapas, Mexico. Explore the benefits of small-scale, diversified beekeeping and the use of traditional ecological knowledge for improved bee care.
Sweden (March 14): Get a glimpse into the beekeeping season in Sweden, offering a unique perspective on honey bee management in northern Europe.
Tibetan Plateau (March 21): Learn about keeping Asian hive bees, particularly Apis cerana, on the Tibetan Plateau, a region with its own distinct beekeeping practices and challenges.
World Traveler (March 28): Discover insights from a global exploration of beekeeping as the speaker shares experiences from visiting beekeepers and agricultural partners in 13 countries worldwide, investigating bee health challenges.
Additionally, participants can access on-demand webinars from the previous year's "Beekeeping Around the World" series, covering topics such as Apimondia, the Canadian Prairies, East Africa, Australia, China, Argentina, and Switzerland.
