A man died days after a bee attack while doing maintenance on the Pusch Ridge Golf Course in Oro Valley on June 24.
Rick Messina was a member of the golf course’s grounds crew and was working when tragedy struck.
El Conquistador Golf members were sent a message July 3, sharing that Messina had been killed by a passing swarm of bees.
Messina was working on the eighth hole when it happened and was transported to a local hospital, where he died three days later.
13 News obtained that message sent to members -- El Conquistador said “Rick was a dedicated and cherished member of our team, known for his exceptional work ethic, positive attitude, and unwavering commitment to his duties. His sudden passing is a profound loss to our work family and our community. He will be deeply missed by all.”
Oro Valley towm council members were given an email that discussed the death with no mention of any details. It said that the course and corporation would provide their official statement on July 1, at which point they would craft a broader message for golf course patrons and the media. The Town of Oro Valley said there was a week’s delay in this process because of the holiday weekend.
After the incident, professional beekeepers inspected all 45 holes at the club for bee activity and none were found.
They said they want to remind all citizens “to be mindful of the wildlife and venomous creatures in our region. Summer is peak season for bee swarms, so please remain vigilant.”
Oro Valley has also added signs along the entrance of this course to be wary of wildlife and venomous creatures.
