Adopt scientific beekeeping to preserve plant biodiversity in natural habitats through improved flower pollination and increased sustainable agricultural production, said head of ICAR-KVK, North Goa, N Bommayasamy. He was speaking at the recently held beekeeping training given to 40 farmers in Old Goa.
“Pollinators in cross-pollinated crops such as coconut and Cucurbitaceous vegetable crops increase seed set and fruit set and provide higher quality produce. Efficient pollination of flowers may protect crops from pests,” he said.
The training programme was organised by ICAR-CCARI, KVK North Goa, and Raika and Co, Goa, aiming to equip farmers with essential skills in beekeeping. During the event, participants learned about the strategic placement of honeybee colonies, including the optimal timing, location, and methods to enhance their effectiveness.
Suprajit Raika, an expert in the field, addressed various practical aspects of beekeeping. He covered crucial topics such as protecting bee colonies from natural enemies, feeding methods, and the importance of pollen supplements. The training also included discussions on managing queen cells, handling issues like robbing and swarming, and ensuring environmental protection for bee colonies.
He also highlighted the importance of safe agrochemical usage, disease management, and identifying common enemies of honeybees. Participants were shown hands-on demonstrations of bee identification, hive cleaning, and artificial feed management techniques.
