Beekeeper Nathaniel Lovell achieved first place in the International Honey – 2 matching jars category at the UK National Honey Show, with his brand La Vie Miel, a Dominican honey brand that he established and runs. The show took place from October 24-26, 2024. Recognized as the largest and most esteemed honey exhibition globally, the UK National Honey Show has been a prominent event for over a century. This year marked the inaugural participation of Dominica in this competition, which features entries from various countries worldwide. This landmark win emphasizes the increasing recognition of Dominican honey internationally and highlights the potential growth of the beekeeping sector in Dominica.
This accomplishment follows Lovell’s accolades at the 2023 St. Lucia Honey Show, where he secured awards for Best Light Amber Honey, Best Dark Amber Honey, and Best in Show. Achieving success at both regional and international levels represents a significant personal achievement for Mr. Lovell and a pivotal advancement for Dominican beekeepers, paving the way for greater awareness and investment in the industry.
Lovell expressed his immense happiness regarding this award, saying, “I’ve always felt that our Dominican honey has very special and unique qualities and it feels great that this has been confirmed at the highest level. It makes me feel proud to represent my country and put Dominica on the map in this international arena”
As a dedicated beekeeper, Nathaniel manages over 100 beehives across seven apiaries located between Coulibistrie and Salisbury. La Vie Miel offers a seasonal selection of honey varieties, including Spring Honey, Summer Honey, Autumn Honey, Savonette Honey, Creamed Honey, and Hot Honey, which is infused with local peppers. Additionally, Lovell produces Mead, a specialty honey wine. La Vie Miel honey is available in numerous local stores in Dominica and is also exported to St. Martin and Tortola.
Nathaniel Lovell serves as the Vice President and Immediate Past President of the National Beekeepers Cooperative and acts as a mentor within the cooperative’s mentorship program. He is currently pursuing the Master Beekeeper Program at the University of Florida, where he is at the Advanced Beekeeper training level. As the global demand for sustainable and high-quality honey continues to grow, this international recognition signifies a crucial moment for Dominican honey and supports the ongoing development of beekeeping in Dominica.
