Montara beekeeper makes museum buzz

Montara beekeeper Catherine Fraley will set the San Mateo County History Museum buzzing with her presentation this weekend.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, Fraley will speak about the history of the honeybee in San Mateo County and in the state of California.

She will discuss how the honeybee arrived on the San Francisco Peninsula shortly after the beginning of the Gold Rush in 1849. And, moving ahead to the present day, she will focus on recent threats to the honeybee populations in the state.

In addition to being a beekeeper, Fraley is an administrator of a local beekeepers’ collective that supplies honey to Bay Area communities. As a member of the San Mateo Beekeepers’ Guild, she gives talks and writes articles that raise awareness about honeybees and their positive impact on the environment.

Her lecture is part of the San Mateo County History Museum’s Courthouse Docket program. Admission to the lecture is included in museum admission of $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students.

The Courthouse Docket programs are held in the museum’s historic Courtroom A, located at 2200 Broadway in Redwood City. The 2012 series of programs is sponsored by Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation.
