Floida Man avoids getting stung while visiting the American HoneyBee Company
On today’s episode of Florida Man Adventures we are here in Trenton, Florida at The American HoneyBee Company, we are looking at these beautiful hives, checking out where honey comes from, and learning how people are finding out how to do it at their house. Let’s check it out.
The American HoneyBee Company’s main mission is to grow interest in beekeeping. They work with local people at their hive location. They’re all about keeping bees happy, healthy, and making lots of honey. Bees from hives at people’s homes will travel up to two and half miles to collect pollen from local wildflowers. American HoneyBee says honey that comes from North Central Florida is some to the tastiest honey around. The company started out of people just asking questions, and the buzz began to grow.
“I kind of started slowly but surely started teaching the community, it started out first as backyard beekeepers. People that just got hives would come back and start asking questions and realize that it is a bit more difficult then what it kind of look like on social media, right,” said Christopher Leach, owner of American HoneyBee Company.
They offer a one-day intro to beekeeping class for first year hobbyists, teaching people the ins and outs of keeping a hive and important things to look for. They also offer mentoring, a monthly personal home visit to your home hive, covering best practices from season to season. But it’s not all for fully bought-in beekeepers...
“So we started a program called kids with bees and we have two options with that. Or first option is you can come out to one of our apiaries that’s a bee yard. And we put the little kids in bee suits and we take them and actually show them what it’s like to go inside a hive. And they can taste the honey right from the hive; it’s really cool. If you are a little farther away or you don’t have the ability to travel to us, we do go to house school groups as well as preschools and daycares. Where we actually bring our friends with us,” said Leach.
Teaching the community about beekeeping and the important role that bees play in our local ecosystem is something The American HoneyBee Company is proud to do.
